Why the Gut Microbiome is so Important for Your Health

Recent research on the gut microbiome is changing the way we think about health. Alterations in the balance of the flora are now linked to a slew of conditions that don’t directly tie to digestive symptoms.

The consequences of not having a healthy flora are huge. It can set us up for neurodegenerative conditions, autoimmune disease, diabetes, and more.

A flora out of balance can contribute to the following:

Food intolerances or food allergies, IBS, Chronic constipation, Insulin resistance, Diabetes or pre diabetes, Obesity, Abdominal fat, Skin rashes (eczema, psoriasis), Restless leg syndrome, Anemia, Low iron, Coronary heart disease

Neurodegenerative conditions (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia), Arthritis, Hashimoto’s thyroid disease, Breast cancer, Fibromyalgia, Autoimmune conditions, Anxiety, Depression.

What damages our flora?

Antibiotics, Glyphosate; Pesticides, Food additives, Birth Control Pills, Anti-inflammatories (over the counter), Antacid medication, Chlorinated water, Stress.

Basically modern life.

The above factors kill hundreds of beneficial bacteria.

These beneficial bacteria help keep the fecal microbes in the colon, where they belong. When the benefitial bacteria disappear there’s a migration of fecal bacteria from the colon to the small intestine, where they have a short life. Once they die they release endotoxins that damage the wall of the small intestine to cross into the bloodstream.

These endotoxins and food particles coming out of the small intestine cause a variety of symptoms. It is estimated that 1 every 2 Americans have digestive issues. These can be mild or more severe like SIBO.

Between 34 to 84% diagnosed with IBS also have SIBO.

How can you tell if you alterations in your microbiome?

  • Food intolerances. You can’t eat, dairy, gluten, legumes, night shades, onions, garlic, and more.
  • Fat floating in the toilet or a ring where the water meets the porcelain.
  • IBS, fibromyalgia, autoimmune or inflammatory conditions.

Working on the digestive system is very important for overall health.

A healthy digestion, aside from having an impact on your overall health, will give you smoother skin, deeper sleep, improve mood, and stronger muscles.

A 4 week program to heal your microbiome can be a good starting point.

I would be happy to help you with it. We can work together with a combination of acupuncture, to optimize the functioning of the digestive system, and coaching, to be able to incorporate lasting changes.
