The practice

Two disciplines,
one conversation.

Coastal Wellness Health is a small, considered practice — the kind where your clinician sits with you long enough to actually hear the story. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine sit alongside naturopathic care, and the two practitioners trade notes when it helps.

Dr. Schmidt brings a 3,000-year tradition into the room with the precision of a trained scientist; Dr. Stockwell pairs naturopathic diagnostics with botanicals, nutrition, and visceral work. The common thread is a slower, more attentive medicine that treats the whole person — not the symptom in isolation.

Practicing together since 2002

Two ways
we practice.

Acupuncture and naturopathic medicine each have their own logic. Patients often see one, sometimes both — and the decision is part of the first visit.

What we treat

You'd be surprised
what responds.

Both the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health recognize acupuncture for a wide range of conditions — from chronic pain and fertility to digestive and respiratory care. Search, or filter by category.

Don't see what you're looking for? Many conditions respond to acupuncture or naturopathic care that aren't on this list. Call us and we'll be honest about whether we're a good fit.

In their own words

From patients who came in skeptical.

For the first time in nine years I was able to genuinely relax. I was the most comfortable I have ever been. I felt good for a long stretch afterward — I wish I could feel that way more often. Everybody should do acupuncture.

First visit

What to know
before you arrive.

A first visit is a longer conversation — usually 60 to 90 minutes — that ends with a treatment plan tailored to you. Here's what most new patients want to know.

Full first-visit guide →
Do you take my insurance?
We accept most insurance plans for acupuncture treatments. Coverage varies — call us with your card on hand and we'll verify benefits before your first visit. Naturopathic services are typically self-pay; we provide superbills you can submit yourself.
Will the needles hurt?
Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a cat's whisker — most patients don't feel the insertion. Pediatric and needle-averse patients can be treated with magnets, laser, or non-needle techniques.
How long is the appointment?
First visits run 60–90 minutes — most of that is conversation and intake. Follow-up acupuncture visits are typically 45–60 minutes. Naturopathic follow-ups vary based on what we're working on.
Should I see Dr. Schmidt or Dr. Stockwell?
Call us and describe what's going on — we'll point you to the right starting place. For pain, most patients begin with acupuncture; for digestive, metabolic, or hormonal work, naturopathy is often the better front door. The two practitioners coordinate when both are involved.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Insurance card, a list of current medications and supplements, and any recent labs or imaging you have. We'll send a New Patient Health History form ahead of time — completing it before you arrive saves time on the day.
How do I book?
By phone — (207) 767-0005. We don't currently use online booking; we'd rather take a few minutes on the phone to get you with the right clinician.
